Birds are environmental detectors
Birds are very important to the environment as they can show the conservation status of the environment.
Through that, ECOWICE conducts bird monitoring programs that help to conserve bird species and the environment.
Conservation of bird species along Mkata river
Mkata river is an important river that passes through Mikumi national park, and it is important for wild animals and the adjacent community. Animals like elephants, normally move along the Mkata river when they move to the saadani national park. Sadly the river has been affected by farming activities that are associated with the use of agrochemicals.
By monitoring the change in the distribution and abundance of bird species will help to determine the level of destruction occurring along the Mkata river, hence immediate conservation action will be taken.
Conservation of bird species at Mkungunero-swagaswaga ecosystem
This project aims at studying and monitor bird species that are consumed and traded in the Mkungunero-Swagaswaga ecosystem in north-central Tanzania.
There is high illegal trapping and consumption of birds that threaten the survival of various bird species in the area. In seeking income and food, the local community hunts birds by using various local tools, and no actions have been taken to reduce this.
The local community is also engaged to understand the significance of conserving birds and develop alternative means of protein and income through mushroom farming.
