Pupils adjacent Mikumi national park visited Mikumi national park
As the future conservators of Mikumi national park, SAVE WILD club members of Mkata primary school visited Mikumi national park to experience the life of animals within the park. ECOWICE supports children adjacent to Mikumi national park to understand the behavior, habitat, and characteristics of various wildlife species they always encounter in their village.They also learn and experience tourism opportunities brought about by wildlife conservation.This tour is aimed at making children learn practically about wildlife and experience the benefits of wildlife to their life. The visit of our partner ADRA Germany
We are grateful to meet Miss Natalie Luejens from our partner organization ADRA Germany who visited our office and project to villages adjacent to Mikumi national park. She has visited our farmer group at Mkata village which practices Community Conservation Bank, Sesame farming, and mushroom farming. She has also visited the SAVE WILD club at Mkata primary school and experience tree planting activities and wildlife games. In the end, We have shared a lot about areas of collaboration and how we can attain the goal of conserving wildlife and forests together. This is a good step toward our collaboration.
Time for plating trees
Time for planting treesAs we are starting the rain season, it’s time for planting trees. Save Wild Club members at Mkata primary school are ready to plant more than 800 tree seedlings from the tree nursery they established in November 2021. These plants are expected to be planted on the school farm and each member will take trees to plant at their homes.’

Save Wild Club members have started a tree nursery project
With the aim of restoring the forest that has been degraded, the club has started a tree nursery that will provide tree seedlings for planting in areas where trees have been lost due to charcoal production and farming. Members will grow seeds that were collected from the forest on world environmental day this year.They are expecting to grow more than 5000 tree seedlings that will be distributed to schools and farmer groups.
The dispersal area and wildlife corridor of Mikumi national park is now set to be under community based forest management.
ECOWICE team has organized a meeting with the village council to discuss the establishment of Community Based Forest Management (CBFM). Through this meeting, various issues regarding conservation and utilization of village forests were addressed, which sensitized the committee to call for CBFM. Mkata river support life for wild animals of Mikumi national park especially for migratory animals like elephants. The river also passes through villages where it supports various livelihoods to an adjacent community such as fishing, farming, and livestock keeping.Hower the river is highly polluted by wastes associated with human activities. Mushroom farming saves nature during off-farm season
It is now summer season where farmers are not engaged in farming, the main source of livelihood for the community adjacent to Mikumi national park. It is the season where farmers struggle to find other sources of livelihood and mostly end up destructing from the forest and wildlife resources.ECOWICE is now supporting farmers to grow mushrooms as a source of livelihood during the off-farm season. Farmers will be supported to obtain materials for mushroom house construction, skills for mushroom farming, and marketing support.The project has started at Mkata village where more than 100 farmers will be supported
